Job Description
Purpose
The Senior Estimator plays a seminal role in the procurement of private work. The position's primary responsibility is to optimize the procurement of available private work in a manner consistent with goals established by the Company. The position's major functions are focused on maximizing efficiency/accuracy related to the estimating process by following Teichert's Best Management Practices; and, specifically by assuring a disciplined approach to the Company's contract procurement process, risk assessment criteria, and proposal quality assurance. Additionally, the Senior Estimator is responsible for developing and maintaining positive working relationships with Teichert's clients through outstanding service from budgeting to project closeout. The Senior Estimator plays a key role in establishing and achieving corporate objectives, and for maintaining a safe and profitable business environment. This position qualifies for a group D car allowance: $600 per month.

Essential duties and responsibilities, i.e. those which are basic, necessary, and an integral part of the job, are indicated below:

Company / Entity
  1. Contributes to the development of, and implements, plans for future business and professional growth by staying abreast of and evaluating trends in the industry. Ensures activities remain focused on long range priorities, customer feedback, and continuously strives to make improvements to day-to-day processes and practices. Works closely with other senior estimators and director on continuous process improvements.
  2. Helps position company for industry changes and opportunities. Specifically, works closely with Corporate Development to identify trends, evaluate market surveys, and promoting Teichert for future opportunities. Assists in the preparation of studies, materials and methods, recommendations, and cost estimates.
  3. Facilitates collaboration across business units and builds consistency across estimating practices and procedures, business development, resources and materials, and company performance. Ensures policies, procedures, and standards are adhered to as well as protect the company's interests.
  4. Establishes, promotes, and protects Teichert Construction values including diversity, teamwork, fair work environment, and respect of others. Maintains a "team" spirit within the department. Works and cooperates with other disciplines (across company lines) to ensure maximum and best use of resources.
  5. Promotes and protects the community perception of Teichert.
Technical / Specialty Area
  1. Ensures estimating function supports company goals and policies through effective management and administration. Assists in determining strategies, techniques, and types of projects to bid on; evaluates and communicates risks throughout the bid process; participates in presentations with corporate management and clients; and may be responsible for closing the "sale" and coordinating with field personnel to schedule work.
  2. Ensures bid process is effective and efficient conforming to our established best practices. Specifically, provides guidance and technical expertise in managing assignments to the estimators under his current oversight; reviews work and checks for accuracy and completeness of current assignments; provides technical support in negotiating contracts, and change orders; reviews estimate cost prior to formal presentation to Director; ensures interpretations of all external codes, regulations, and specifications, and ensures job estimates are completed on time. Collaborates with other Senior Estimators with local knowledge and requirements for their assignments. Presents Bid Analysis Worksheet to Director for final mark-up and strategy bid review. Supports Public Works Procurement Goals as needed.
  3. Specifically, provides management direction to estimator assignments; motivates employees to function as a cohesive unit; attends and may oversee regularly planned meetings; provides coaching, training, and mentoring opportunities.
  4. Focuses, builds and maintains positive working relationships with external clients. Follows up regularly with assigned "client accounts". Relationships result in increased business, repeat customers, and industry referrals. Communicates company and project policies, procedures, and standards. Assists Corporate Development and Private Procurement pursuit of new business opportunities.
  5. Assists in achieving a zero injury culture through supporting safety programs and actively participating in appropriate safety meetings and training sessions to maintain a safe, healthy work environment and meeting corporate safety standards.
  6. Ensures documentation, including TMaps, project logs, files, records and reports pertaining to Estimating function are maintained and kept accurate. May include bids, cost estimates, state and federal regulations and codes, etc.; Assists with continuous process improvement activities regarding estimating guidelines, manuals, and policies and procedures.

  • Director of Public Procurement, Other Senior Estimators, Estimators, Area Manager, General Superintendent, Superintendents, Project Managers, Corporate Administrative Manager, Contract Administrator, Cost Analysts, Project Engineers, Administrative Staff, Materials, Mobile Equipment, and other business units.
